Onimusha: Way of the Sword (鬼武者 Way of the Sword) is an upcoming third-person single-player swordplay action video game developed and published by Capcom. "Way of the Sword" is a new entry in Capcom's Onimusha game series. It is set to be released in 2026 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.

Plot[]

With every stage cloaked in mystery, danger and intrigue. Battle against monstrosities from the underworld known as Genma in a tale of dark fantasy. Follow the tale of a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet, a mystical artifact that grants its bearer the power to slay Genma. Through gritty, blood-soaked brawls, he searches for his reason to fight. What fate awaits at the end of his path?

Gameplay[]

The player primarily fights wield a single katana with which they can perform either a one-handed attack, quick but relative weak slashes, or two-handed attacks, stronger slashes but with longer windup. On top of dealing damage, each attack depletes the stamina of foes, once depleted the player can perform a Break Issen, a special technique that will instantly kill regular Genmas and deal severe damage to bosses.

The player has access to other magical weapons but unlike previous Onimusha games, they can't normally wield them and in order to unleash their power they must first fill a magic gauge by absorbing blue obs. Unleashing the their power will then deplete the magic gauge and make the weapon unavailable until it's filled again.

To defend themselves the player can perform deflects, a defensive action that reflects attacks back at enemies, parry incoming attacks with a well-timed block and follow up with a counterattack or knock enemies into their allies and terrain, or preform a dodge action. Deflects and parries can deplete foe's stamina.

Development[]

According to producer Akihito Kadowaki, lots of people within Capcom have wanted to make a new Onimusha title. However, as Capcom released many games every year and said games required a lot of power to develop them, they couldn't get the right amount of people to make the new installment. In 2020 they were able to gather and form the team and would develop the new installment, at the same time the RE Engine, Capcom's proprietary game engine, was picked as engine to develop it.[1]
